First Bite: How We Learn to Eat
First Bite: How We Learn to Eat by Bee Wilson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“First Bite: How We Learn to Eat” by Bee Wilson is a way of looking how we view food and teach our children to view food. Her book uses research from food psychologists, neuroscientists, and nutritionists.

I believe this book is great for anyone even if you don’t have children. It will help you look at food differently. How we view food is a difficult subject to cover, but the author does a great job of making the reading interesting and making you want to continue reading. It is nice to see information like this in great detail. This book will help others not go through any of the cycles that some of us have done. When I was a teenager, I would skip lunch because I was so worried about gaining weight. I didn’t start looking at food differently until I was in my late forties. This book helped me to continue my journey into looking at food differently. When you are routinely eating healthy meals, it is amazing how much better you feel.
An excellent volume that is full of research and studies.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley/Basic Books Group, for an honest review.

Baking for Breakfast: Sweet and Savory Treats for Mornings at Home by Donna Leahy
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have received a copy of this book from NetGalley/Food Arts Fusion LLC for an honest review. “Baking for Breakfast” by Donna Leahy has recipes ranging from quick breads, cobblers, donuts, to biscuits.

I like that there are recipes to choose from when you’re short on time and recipes for when you have a little more time. Also, the recipes that may take a little longer you are given instructions on what can be done ahead. The format and directions of the recipes are easy to follow.

With the holidays coming up there are so many great choices to choose from to serve your family. I think the Apple Crumb muffins, Cheese Danish, and the Cranberry, Pistachio and White Chocolate Biscotti would be great with a cup of coffee or tea.

Preserving Family Recipes: How to Save and Celebrate Your Food Traditions
Preserving Family Recipes: How to Save and Celebrate Your Food Traditions by Valerie J. Frey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley/University of Georgia Press for an honest review. “Preserving Family Recipes” by Valerie J. Frey is a guide in preserving family recipes.

This a comprehensive guide. I think anyone could use this from simply saving your families favorite recipes to publishing them. Valerie offers ways to organize, protect, and adjust your recipes.

What I liked is that I can take her guidance and fit it to meet what I feel is important to me. Lots of valuable tips.

The New Sugar & Spice: A Recipe for Bolder Baking
The New Sugar & Spice: A Recipe for Bolder Baking by Samantha Seneviratne
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley/Ten Speed Press for an honest review. “The New Sugar and Spice” by Samantha Seneviratne is a unique way of making healthier desserts by using spices.

This is more than a cookbook. You not only get great recipes using spices from pepper to cardamom, but you also get a personal story from the author. I loved reading her stories.

To me this book could be used as a reference book with the equipment information to the details about the ingredients. You will learn the history of the spices, how to buy and store the spices. Also, you will learn how to tell if the spices are still good and an explanation on the flavor they can provide to our recipes.

Nashville Eats: Hot Chicken, Buttermilk Biscuits, and 100 More Southern Recipes from Music City by Jennifer Justus
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley/ABRAMS/Stewart, Tabori & Chang/ Cooking, Food & Wine for an honest review. “Nashville Eats” by Jennifer Justus is more than a cookbook. This cookbook includes history of some of Nashville foods both past and present along with the amazing pictures make it a great book to own. The author did a great job of showing how the people of Nashville in the past and present are still giving back to their community. The introduction draws you in and you want to read more not just scan through the book. I loved the stories at the beginning of each section. The kitchen playlist through out the book were enjoyable to read too. There are more than 100 recipes from biscuits, hot chicken, blackberry cobbler to brisket with grits and much more. The recipes look easy to prepare and delicious. I really loved this book!
